Many people dread going to bed during the summer months (or even year round) because they know what’s coming. At first, you are drifting comfortably off to sleep, eyelids become heavy, and then you start to feel warm. The warmth causes you to quickly kick the covers off to find relief. And just as you start to relax and drift off again, you are awoken by feeling too cold, so naturally, you pull the covers back over you. The cycle continues throughout the night, until you wake up to the alarm, feeling the toll of a lack of restorative sleep.
Did you know that it is our own body’s temperature regulating system that could be attributing to these restless nights? We perspire and respire up to a pint of moisture at night. With insufficient ventilation, that moisture - or water vapor - builds up and creates a humid environment that increases your heart rate and metabolism, causing you to overheat and kick those covers back off. Once the covers are off, that same moisture then causes you to feel cold, and the cycle repeats itself. The mainstream mattress and bedding industry, with its mass produced poly-based materials and fillers, has yet to find an adequate solution for this.
There is a bright side: natural materials, like cotton, wool, and natural latex foam are all far more breathable than their synthetic counterparts. Wool itself is a moisture mitigator and has the ability to wick that moisture away from your body and reduce clamminess to keep you drier and helps it to evaporate throughout the day. This allows your body to self-regulate more efficiently, which means you will feel cooler when it is warm and warmer when it is cool, and sleep more comfortably.
