Why is your coil fabric polypropylene instead of natural cotton?

Strength and performance, including excellent moisture resistance, mold resistant, flexibility, stability, light weight and quiet. The prime focus in our mattress design is function and performance not organic certification. While all our materials are certified chemically safe, mostly natural and some are certified organic, we use polypropylene for our individually encased coil material because it performs better than cotton which is the only natural material available. Polypropylene is quick drying which is important to prevent the growth of mold and bacteria inside your mattress. It is very quiet and does not make crunchy noises when you move in bed. It allows the hot-melt (solvent free) glue to bond tightly to it to prevent separation of the rows of coils guaranteeing exceptional durability. As with everything else in life the right balance has to be struck between natural and functional and we believe that the earth is better served by a bed that has a long and well-performing life span compared to a 100% natural design where some components are of a lesser functionality and the bed has to be replaced in a much shorter time-span. Our non-woven polypropylene is a chemically safe material that has been developed over 50 years ago and since been widely used for all kinds of everyday applications (food packaging, clothing etc.) It is also used in the medical field for sutures, artificial vascular grafts, catheters and disposable syringes. It has been used for individual fabric encased coils for decades and proven to work extremely well.

Why do you use Talalay and not Dunlop process latex?

We get asked this question more and more as latex becomes more popular. We have always used only latex for our cushioning layers - for cores too in our all-latex model- and in fact, have tried and used both types of latex ever since we have been selling mattresses. We prefer, but more importantly, our customers prefer natural Talalay. Why? - because Talalay is inherently more comfortable and more breathable, and that really matters when it comes to cushioning, comforting and temperature regulating our bodies for deeper sleep. Not-too-technically speaking, Talalay's round and open cell structure allows for more breathability and elasticity than Dunlop's coral-like cell structure. Talalay can be made in a wide range of densities all the way from super soft to extra firm, never feels just hard and offers superior pressure relief compared to Dunlop. As with any latex, if made with expertise and care, without cheap fillers and properly washed before drying, both Dunlop and Talalay can be of high quality and durability. However, we have experienced less height and hardness loss and more firmness consistency with Talalay compared to Dunlop. Dunlop is a more basic manufacturing process, requiring much lower production investment and technical know-how so as a result Dunlop latex is less expensive than Talalay. More companies now buy Dunlop latex cheaply directly from sources in Asia, as is reflected in lower cost latex and latex content mattresses being sold online. But for us, functionality, performance and health come first, so natural Talalay is definitely worth it and the way to go. A recent test by Radium / Vita Talalay proved that even at a lower density compared to the Dunlop material in the test, Talalay shows 40% less height loss (sagging) and 50% less firmness loss (softening) over 10 years of use compared to Dunlop. Additionally, our pure natural Vita Talalay latex is Cradle to Cradle Gold certified - the most comprehensive and credible certification in the entire latex industry when it comes to chemical safety and sustainability.

Is your latex organic?

Our natural Talalay latex is Cradle to Cradle GOLD certified. We feel that this is the most comprehensive standard currently available in the industry. In comparison GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) is very limited in its scope and doesn't even test offgassing of the finished product. The GOLS certification allows up to 5% of the formulation to be "non-organic" materials excl. synthetic rubber. It is impossible to make latex foam without additives (soap, sulphur, gelling agents etc.) so a lot can happen on the way from making the organic raw material into latex foam. We only use natural Talalay latex because it is superior to latex blends and Dunlop latex with regards to performance and durability.

Why don't you use memory foam?

Sleep & ergonomic research proves that it is important for the sleeper to be able to move easily and being immediately supported in the new sleeping position. This can only be achieved by a very resilient foam or springs – not memory foam.

What about chemicals?

European Sleep Design mattresses contain no harmful chemicals, no flame retardant, no formaldehyde, and no dangerous residues that can be inhaled or absorbed. The components of our mattresses have been thoroughly tested and certified clean and safe by Oeko-Tex, an environmental testing agency based in Europe.

Many consumers ask for organic mattresses or certified organic mattresses assuming that this is their best and safest choice. However, an organic certification has little to nothing to do with the quality or performance of a product. It's virtually identical to the same material that does not have an organic certification even though it adds to the cost of a product. For example: Our natural Talalay latex is Cradle to Cradle GOLD certified. We feel that this is the most comprehensive standard currently available in the industry. In comparison GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) is very limited in its scope and doesn't even test off-gassing of the finished product so additional tests after processing are required to prove that it is safe. The GOLS certification allows up to 5% of the formulation to be "non-organic" materials excl. synthetic rubber. It is impossible to make latex foam without additives (soap, sulphur, gelling agents etc.) so a lot can happen on the way from making the organic raw material into latex foam. It is crucial to buy latex from a reputable manufacturer who has strict standards and process control throughout their manufacturing and independent test reports confirming chemical safety of their finished latex cores, sheets and pillows.

Do the slats ever break?

Very rarely. But sometimes there may be a hairline fracture that causes one to split. If that happens, European Sleep Design can send a new slat and you can easily replace it yourself: snap in, snap out; you don't need any tools or special hardware.

Why haven't I seen this before?

It's a relatively new concept in the United States. But the slat suspension system is fairly well-known in Europe and other parts of the world. It was introduced over 60 years ago and many companies manufacture sleep systems in that style. Latex foam rubber mattress fill is also more common in other countries.

Will this bed sleep “hot

No. Synthetics and polyesters do because they don't allow moisture to evaporate; they retain moisture and lock the humidity in. European Sleep Design's mattresses have several elements that guard against that. There is a wool layer and wool is one of the best dissipaters of moisture, keeping sleeping temperatures comfortable. (In fact we recommend wool covers and pillows, too.) The cotton in the mattress covering also allows moisture to permeate and evaporate instead of trapping it. The natural latex foam is constructed with "breathable" air holes to aid in thermal balance. And the steel innersprings allow air to circulate while increased airflow beneath the mattress means greater hygiene.

Why did my Sealy/Simmons/Serta sag so quickly?

Probably several reasons. The poor quality cushioning (couch-grade polyfoam) loses about 40% of its resilience in the first 18 months. If it was an extra-thick, extra-padded mattress, research shows that the more plush the padding, the faster it breaks down. Also, many U.S. manufacturers are not making higher innerspring coils for these extra-thick mattresses. They're just stretching out the standard coil. So it loses its compression and shock absorption properties relatively quickly.

What about allergies (to the latex or the wool)?

A very small percentage of people are allergic to latex. Usually they work around latex and directly handle it, such as health workers allergic to latex surgical gloves. The number of latex proteins found in foam latex is infinitesimal compared to latex gloves. If you don't have a diagnosed allergy to latex, you shouldn't worry about it. In fact, latex rubber usually eases a lot of allergy problems (due to mold and mildew). As for the light-weight wool in the mattress lining, there's no known allergy specifically to wool. And the wool in the mattress never contacts the skin.

How do you make your mattresses flame retardant?

We use pure sheep wool as a natural flame barrier in our mattress cover design to meet the standard. Wool (like any natural hair) burns cool, self extinguishes after a very short period and leaves a char layer that works as a very efficient heat insulator to protect the core from ignition. We do not use any chemical sprays or artificial flame barriers in any of our materials for mattresses or foundations. Wool is very expensive and this is not the most cost-effective, but the most natural and healthiest way to meet the flammability standard. Our mattresses and mattress sets have been tested by the relevant government approved laboratories and passed the open flame test with a comfortable margin. The relevant information can be found on the law label and the Certification of Compliance issued for each delivery.

Does latex break down?

Latex foam is the single most durable cushioning material known. That refers to high-quality natural latex foam like European Sleep Design's. Some materials have been misleadingly called latex, but they aren't really. They are either subjected to inferior processes or blended with large amounts of clay or silicates, so they do disintegrate. But not ours.

What if things change & I need different support in later years?

The slat settings you receive cover a fairly wide range of changing needs. But sometimes you need a re-adjustment. Most problems are easy to solve; you can try different slider settings yourself. Or you can call European Sleep Design and we will help you determine how to reposition the sliders to get the best results.

Will this fix my (back/shoulder/hip) problem?

"Fix" it? That's a hard one to answer. Physical problems have many sources. A bad mattress - bad support - can certainly aggravate a condition. And if you sleep on the right mattress, you may find the problem goes away or lessens. No mattress can be guaranteed as a "cure" for anything. But we do know that our European Sleep Design mattresses provide excellent support and comfort.

How do I know this will be right for me?

You don't really. Buying a mattress can be very difficult. It ranks highest in terms of consumer dissatisfaction. (30% of consumers are unsuccessful in their first serious attempt at making a mattress purchase and delay the buying decision for up to a year. And 30% don't like the one they do finally purchase.) The problem is, because people only test a mattress briefly in the store, they don't realize the mattress is poorly designed or made with poor quality materials. European Sleep Design's mattresses not only have superior components and design, but a huge advantage over other mattresses in that you can adjust and readjust them, giving you almost unlimited options after your purchase.

How about side-to-side bounce?

Not on a mattress from European Sleep Design. Because of the significantly higher number of compressed coils (up to 3,594), the resiliency of the latex, the flexible slat suspension system, and the special quilting on the top pad, this is an extremely quiet mattress.

Is a firm mattress better for my back?

Not necessarily. U.S. mattresses need to be firm simply because they sag and wear out quickly. It's not a question of better support; in fact, a firm mattress often lacks good contact pressure so it's not providing adequate support. In a well-designed mattress like European Sleep Design's mattress, firmness or softness is just personal preference and has little bearing on the overall support dynamic.

With slats set for side-sleeping, can I sleep on my back?

Yes. We understand that most people sleep in multiple positions. We've found, in fitting thousands of customers, that the base support provided by this sleep system accommodates the differing needs of back and side-sleeping.

Are the quilted mattress and pad covers machine washable?

Please do not wash or dry clean your mattress cover. It will shrink and not fit back onto the mattress. You can take the top panel off to air out seasonally. You can also put it in the dryer for a half an hour on a cool setting if outdoor airing is inconvenient. If necessary you can spot clean the cover with a gentle detergent. Place a towel underneath while you spot clean from above. Make sure you allow to dry well before zipping back on. Please, keep your latex inside and out of the sun.
